President Barack Obama sought to reignite the youthful energy that propelled his 2008 election Wednesday with a campaign-style visit to the nexus of social communications, Facebook.

Democrats acknowledge that Obama will need to rally many of the same forces that propelled him into the White House in order to win re-election in 2012: an army of young, energetic voters as well as a sizable showing from independent voters.

The Bottom Line

David Cromer?s production overplays the melancholy and under-serves the humor, but the enduring originality of John Guare?s breakthrough play prevails.?

Cast

Ben Stiller, Edie Falco, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Thomas Sadoski, Allison Pill, Mary Beth Hurt, Christopher Abbott, Halley Feiffer, Susan Bennett

Playwright

John Guare

Director

David Cromer

NEW YORK ? Ben Stiller and Edie Falco give affecting performances in The House of Blue Leaves, their characterizations freighted with a melancholy history of affection, friction and affliction. Their work is all the more admirable given the distancing nature of David Cromer?s unbalanced production, but John Guare?s play remains a strange and wonderful creation more than 40 years after it premiered.

George S. Kaufman famously remarked, ?Satire is what closes on Saturday night.? But Guare?s breakout comic masterwork about losers and dreamers challenges that theory. First staged in 1966, this absurdist black comedy has grown perhaps even more corrosive in its twisted view of success, celebrity, religion, marriage and the American Dream.

When the play was written, fame was still an unattainable fantasy to the average American, conjured through visions of movie stardom and Ed Sullivan Show appearances, or in extreme cases, criminal notoriety. In this era of instant, talent-optional celebrity, every schmuck with a pushy attitude feels entitled to his or her 15 minutes, mostly aspiring to fame itself, not to any professional excellence as a means to it. That makes the aching hunger with which Guare?s characters chase stardom, or access to it, quaint, poignant and ever more pertinent.

The action takes place in October 1965, the day of the Pope?s visit to New York to make a plea to the U.N. to end the war in Vietnam. As the Vatican motorcade passes through Sunnyside, Queens, en route from the airport, Bunny Flingus (Jennifer Jason Leigh) drags off zookeeper and frustrated songwriter Artie Shaughnessy (Stiller), her upstairs neighbor and lover, to receive a blessing on their union.

The plan is for Artie to have his catatonic wife, Bananas (Falco), committed, so he and Bunny can move to California where Artie?s old neighborhood pal, famed director Billy Einhorn (Thomas Sadoski), can open doors in Hollywood.

The play?s second act careens into farcical chaos. Artie and Bananas? son Ronnie (Christopher Abbott) has gone AWOL from basic training and built a bomb to assassinate the Pope. Billy?s girlfriend, Corrinna Stroller (Allison Pill), turns up to visit. Deaf since an accident on set, the former actress promptly loses her hearing aid and tries to hide her disability. And three nuns from Ridgewood (Mary Beth Hurt, Susan Bennett, Halley Feiffer) climb in through the Shaughnessys? window to watch the papal coverage on TV.

In the play?s off-kilter world, God and the Pope are just two more points on the celestial celebrity map. Pill?s funny-sad ethereal performance exposes the cultivated poise and glamour of Hollywood as another empty fantasy, while the solace of Billy?s connection to his roots depends on those roots remaining undisturbed.

Guare?s play maintains a delicate equilibrium between zaniness and gravity. The agita of characters seeking a miraculous transformation in their lives is played against the black comedy of their clumsy desperation. As he showed in his textured productions of Our Town and Brighton Beach Memoirs, Cromer specializes in excavating the gritty emotional realism beneath the theatrical surface. But he mines pathos at the expense of the play?s life-giving humor, particularly in the ponderous first act.

The casting of Leigh is problematic. Bunny is an abrasive character, but in Leigh?s croaky performance, she?s merely obnoxious. While her blind faith in Artie?s negligible songwriting talent is clearly a force in their relationship, there?s zero warmth in this woman. That makes it hard to care for Artie as he prepares to ditch Bananas for the insensitive harpy downstairs.

Stiller has a personal history with the play. His mother, Anne Meara, played Bunny in the 1971 Off Broadway premiere, and he made his Broadway debut as Ronnie in the memorable 1986 Lincoln Center Theater revival, opposite John Mahoney, Swoosie Kurtz and Stockard Channing.

Tamping down his natural eccentricity, Stiller plays Artie as a man crushed by disappointment yet unable to abandon his dreams. As he performs his dreadful Tin Pan Alley ditties at a local amateur night in the play?s prelude, the comedy of awkwardness is excruciating. It?s a major understatement when he scans the shabby confines of Scott Pask?s beat-up apartment set and says, ?This is not a creative atmosphere.? Stiller taps into a very real ache, coming alive with manic energy during an impulsive phone call to Billy. And his lingering tenderness for Bananas is deeply touching.

Drabbed-down in shapeless housedress, two baggy cardigans and a lank wig, Falco is like a ghost, longing to experience an emotion not suppressed by a pill. But despite her inescapable sorrow and disconcerting habit of barking like a dog, she?s the sanest person in the room, a distinction enhanced by the suggestion of passive-aggressive mischief in her dazed comments.

It?s impossible to ignore the nagging evidence that this is not a great match of director and material. The sober intensity of Cromer?s approach makes Guare?s cruel destination seem a logical place to arrive, rather than a stinging slap as you exit the fun house. The production frequently sings, particularly in some brilliant monologues, yet it cries out overall for a lighter touch. That the play?s originality still ultimately wins out is a testament to its acute observation of our perverse relationship with fame.

Apple has been cashing in on the increased attention it's garnered from the business and consumer worlds in recent years. Unfortunately, the ne'er-do-wells of the technology world continue to step up their attempts to get a piece of the action, targeting malware squarely at Mac users.

IT security experts, such as InfoWorld Security Adviser Roger Grimes, have argued that obscurity is the greatest security defense a platform can have, which is why Windows and Internet Explorer have historically been hit more successfully than Mac or Safari. Even just a couple of years ago, malware targeting the Mac -- such as MacSweeper, the first scareware for the Mac -- was something of a novelty, though the Mac OS had proven itself far from bulletproof. But as experts have predicted, Mac-honed malware is becoming more and more the norm.

One of the more notable developments of the Mac attracting cyber criminal attention is the emergence of what's purportedly the world's first do-it-yourself crimeware kit primed for Mac OS X. Recently announced in some closed underground forums, according to Danish IT security company CSIS Security Group, the tool enables users to build malware to turn victim Mac OS X machines into zombies with point-and-click simplicity.

The kit, called Weyland-Yutani Bot, comprises a builder that enables a user to create malware capable of Web injections and form grabbing, according to the kit's creator. It also boasts an administration panel and supports encryption.

Presently the kit supports Firefox and Chrome; support for Safari will follow, according to CSIS. Additionally, the creator of the kit claims that similar kits for iPad and Linux will be forthcoming.

The kit, by the way, costs about $1,000 -- payable only in virtual currencies such as WMZ.

The Weyland-Yutani Bot's emergence comes on the heels of other malware and scams aimed at the Mac. For example, Mac security company Intego reported Monday that scammers are distributing rogueware dubbed Mac Defender. The malware is designed to fool users into thinking their machines are infected with viruses so they'll fork over money for what is really a fake security program.

Additionally, in late February, Sophos reported that a bare-bones, easy-to-use Trojan called BlackHole RAT (remote access Trojan) had emerged. Among its tricks: informing users that "most people think Macs can't be Infected [sic], but look, you ARE infected!"

Stepping back further in time, Intego reported approximately 11 months ago that a high-risk spyware application called OSX/OpinionSpy had started spreading via a number of freely distributed Mac applications and screensavers found around the Web.

Thu, 05 May 2011 02:30:32 -0700 Walmart to Sell Samsung Infuse 4G in May for $178.88? http://oreillylmr00.posterous.com/walmart-to-sell-samsung-infuse-4g-in-may-for http://oreillylmr00.posterous.com/walmart-to-sell-samsung-infuse-4g-in-may-for
The Samsung Infuse 4G has yet to make its way to market, but when it does, you might be able to find it at Walmart. Rumor has it that the retail giant has been sending around circulars indicating that the Infuse and its 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display will hit shelves sometime next month. The notices also mention that the device will be sold for $178.88, which would likely be bundled with a two-year AT&T contract. There hasn't been any confirmation from Samsung, which unveiled the ultra-thin smartphone way back in January, but we'll let you know as soon as we get word.

[Thanks, John]

The National Labor Relations Board has moved to stop Boeing from building airplanes at a nonunion plant in South Carolina. The Board suggests that a unionized American company cannot, without violating federal labor law, expand its operations into one of the 22 states with right-to-work laws, which protect a worker's right to join or not join a union. (New Hampshire's legislature has just approved its becoming the 23rd.)

This reminds me of a White House state dinner in February 1979, when I was governor of Tennessee. President Jimmy Carter said, "Governors, go to Japan. Persuade them to make here what they sell here."

"Make here what they sell here" was then the union battle cry, part of an effort to slow the tide of Japanese cars and trucks entering the U.S. market....

The Beastie Boys, present-day.

The Beastie Boys, present-day.

In 1986, the Beastie Boys released a video for "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)," the first single from their first album, Licensed to Ill. In that video, the three Beastie Boys crashed a party and trashed an apartment. In the early days of MTV, it was one of the channel's most popular videos. 25 years later, the Boys have finally made a sequel.

In the original "Fight for Your Right" video, the mayhem instigated by Ad-Rock, MCA and Mike D was mostly of the juvenile prankster variety. Punch got spiked. A TV got smashed with a sledgehammer. Many, many whipped cream pies were thrown.

The new, 22-minute-long film, which aired Wednesday night on Comedy Central, picks up right where the original ended, with the Beasties sneaking out of the party they've just trashed. Now, though, they're played by younger film stars ? Seth Rogen as Mike D, Danny McBride as MCA, Elijah Wood as Ad-Rock. The mayhem, once the three punks hit the street, is as messy and irreverent as ever.

?

Above, the short version of the film. To see the full 22 minutes you'll have to get some basic cable and hope for the best.

The 2011 budget is bigger, and the victims of the Beasties antics are all played by Hollywood stars. Ted Danson as a maitre'd. Chloe Sevigny, Kirsten Dunst and Maya Rudolph as three rock fans the boys meet in the back of a limo. These cameos are brief ? just a few seconds each, until the film's final chapter, in which our heroes run smack into another version of themselves, sent from the future, and played by John C. Reilly, Jack Black and Will Ferrell.

These are paunchy, gray-haired versions of the "Fight For Your Right" Beasties, Guys who never grew up, never organized Tibetan Freedom Concerts, never advocated for the rights of women at large concerts, who just kept raising hell and fighting for their right to party, unchecked, for 25 years.

Think of it as a statement: even though their music has stayed vibrant, playful and young, the men behind it have grown up. And they're really happy to be grown up. As MCA says in "Make Some Noise," the song that soundtracks Fight For Your Right Revisited, "My rhymes age like wine as I get older." Let's hope the Beastie Boys keep getting older.

Macles reports that Acer will refresh its Aspire One Happy line with a quartet of edible colors: Blueberry Shake, Banana Cream, Papaya Milk and Strawberry Yogurt. Those vibrant shells will have the innards of the still-unreleased Acer One D257, including a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N570 dual-core processor, along with the usual 10.1-inch display, 2GB memory, 250GB hard drive, and a six-cell battery. And yes, there will be 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth, and Windows 7 Starter. No word yet on availability and pricing, but it's probably smarter to wait rather than try to make your own with a dye tab and a sink full of vinegar.

The link to download this house is over here: www.thesims3.com I really like the pool decks ?beach towels?! That?s my definition of detail!!! I finally get into the meaty part of the house and I add Carnelians feature in too, It?s a shame that it?s not as big but I forgot to make space for it earlier, oh well, it still works! This house is GREEN!!! X ] Each installment of my ?Colour Series? will have a new feature that I will use for the next installment, so Green will have an amalgamation of all the previous houses, effectively making it a super house! Blue has the colour theme. Orange has the pond. Black and White has the lowered living room. Red has the indoor garden? and to an extent the garage. Green has the guest house, as well as all the others mentioned above! Green with Envious Springs took a massive 7.5 hours to build and costs 9 000 furnished and 2 000 unfurnished. Finally, I am NOT taking requests, AT ALL, I?ve got 2 in line to do plus some tutorials people have asked me to make. I want the freedom of making whatever I want again, and maybe go back and play Sims 2 for some more better houses! Enjoy!
